The District of Columbia region has not escaped the problems caused by the foreclosure crisis in the United States. Many households in the Washington DC area have been affected, including those whose occupants have lost their jobs or otherwise struggle to make mortgage payments. As of December 2009, more than 114,000 households were delinquent on their mortgage payments, representing 9.5 percent of all mortgages in the metropolitan area.
